Yeah! It's the first day of Club Read 2010! The program looks great -- and nice blog photo, Liz. I'm excited to see how the blog does
I've read two Peter Hedges books: What's Eating Gilbert Grape and An Ocean in Iowa. Both are funny stories of dysfunctional (but functional in their own way) Iowa families set in recent decades. The Iowa references are fun to see in a novel. I enjoyed the picture Hedges built up of both families--the Grapes in smalltown Endora, Iowa, and the Oceans of suburban Des Moines. Definitely worth your time!
I've been hearing about What's Eating Gilbert Grape for about a thousand years. I may have to give that one a try. Is it better than the movie? :)
Jo, I've never watched the movie, but now I want to see it. But silly you, books are ALWAYS better than the movies!
About Gilbert Grape: I read the book first and found it compelling. I was on the beach at Cancun and didn't realize I was getting sunburned--the book was that good! Deb's right: the book is better than the movie.
